Grade Level: 2nd Grade / Primary Elementary
Rating: 4.5 Stars

Planning Body-Building Lunches
Students plan two lunches for the Pyramid Cafe's® lunch menu and work in pairs to make sure each is a body-building lunch. Finally, they share one of their lunches with the entire class and receive a Guest Chef Award.

Activity Outcomes
Students will be able to:
  • Understand that nutritious foods can be combined to make body-building meals
  • Plan two body-building lunches they would like to eat
  • Describe one of their lunches to the class
Materials and Advance Prep
  • Write questions for the second step on the chalkboard
  • Prepare a Guest Chef Awards - PDF certificate (1 per student)
  • Pyramid Cafe® Mini Poster PDF (1 per student)
  • Planning Pyramid Cafe® Lunch Specials PDF worksheet (1 per student)
What to Do
  • Tell students that the Pyramid Pals want new lunch ideas for the Pyramid Cafe's® menu. Each student will plan two nutritious lunches for the cafe.
  • Tell students you want to make sure they are qualified to be guest chefs. Point to questions on the chalkboard. Ask students to turn to their neighbor and answer both questions.
    • What makes a food nutritious? (If it's in one of the Five Food Groups and it helps the body grow and stay healthy.)
    • How can you tell if a lunch is a body-building lunch? (If it has at least three of the Five Food Groups.)

Review the answers as a class.

  • Distribute the Planning Pyramid Cafe® Lunch Specials worksheet. Review the directions. Remind students they can use their Pyramid Cafe® mini-poster and Pyramid Food Cards. They should plan lunches they would like to eat.
  • Break students into pairs. Have students look at their partner's lunches and count to make sure they have at least three of the Five Food Groups.
  • Afterwards, ask each student to pick one of their lunches and describe it to the class. As each reports, have other students use their fingers to count how many different foods are in the lunch.
  • End the session by presenting the Guest Chef Award certificates.

Going Further
Classroom Picnic
Celebrate the end of the Pyramid Cafe® unit with an indoor picnic. Send a letter home asking parents/guardians to allow their child to plan his/her own lunch for the event. Remind students to bring a "body-building" lunch. On the day of the picnic, take photos of the students with their lunch.

Reader's Theater Revisited
Use the Reader's Theater as a culminating activity. Some of the options to consider are:

  • Having students make costumes or props for the performance.
  • Inviting parents, the principal, or another class to the reading.
  • Having guests participate as the reading's chorus.
