Grade Level: 2nd Grade / Primary Elementary
Rating: 5 Stars

Learn About the Meat Group
Students identify foods in the Meat Group and learn that these foods build strong, healthy muscles. They add Meat Group foods to their deck of Pyramid Food Cards and help Frank Strong-muscle organize the Pyramid Cafe's® Mixed-Up Food Delivery.

Activity Outcomes
Students will be able to:
  • Name at least three foods that belong to the Meat Group
  • State how foods in the Meat Group keep them healthy
  • State the function of strong muscles and the relationship between exercise and strong muscles
  • Classify Meat Group Food Cards according to personal criteria
Materials and Advance Prep
  • Learn About the Meat Group PDF worksheet (1 per student)
  • Meat Group Food Cards worksheet (1 per student) Save class time by having students prepare their Food Cards as homework.
  • Food Card Sort PDF worksheet (1 per student) from Lesson 3
  • Pyramid Cafe® Mini Poster PDF (1 per student)
  • The Pyramid Cafe's® Five Food Groups PDF assessment (1 per student) Decide whether to use it as a test, homework or seatwork.
What to Do
  • Begin by telling the class that today is muscle day. Ask students to guess how many muscles their bodies have. (About 650) Continue by asking students what they think muscles help their bodies do.
  • Distribute the Learn About the Meat Group worksheets. As a class, read Frank Strong-muscle's "Meat Group Foods" quote and the "Why Muscles Are Important" paragraphs.
  • Have students feel their muscles. Tell them to hold their right arm out straight ahead and place their left hand on their upper right arm. Now have them bend their right arm up to their shoulder. Ask them to pay attention to the muscles in their upper arm. Can they feel the muscles move?
  • Read "Let's Use Some Muscles" and have students complete the actions.
  • Review the list of Meat Group food examples.
  • Distribute and review foods on Meat Group Food Cards worksheet. Have students color and cut them apart. Direct students to sort their Food Cards using the Food Group Sort worksheet (See Meet the Milk Group, Step 4).
  • When students are done, have them hold up the cards they put in the "I like this food a lot" section. Tell students to look around at their classmates' cards. Point out similarities and differences. Repeat this for the other three sections.
  • Tell students that on the count of three you want them to hold up the Food Card with their favorite muscle-building Meat Group food. Give them a minute to find their card. Count 1, 2, 3!
Assessment
  • Distribute and have students complete The Pyramid Cafe's® Mixed-Up Food Delivery worksheet.
  • Review and have students correct any wrong answers.
  • Optional: Distribute the Daily Food Guide Pyramid take-home handout.

Going Further
Muscles in Motion
Make an Action Plan worksheet for students to plan a week's worth of physical activity. As a class, brainstorm vigorous activities they can do. Using the brainstorm list, have students make plans for being active and carry it out for the next week.

I taught this lesson and the rest of the Pyramid Cafe to my six year old First Grader, Who is Homeschooled.
The Lessons were easy to use and understand and she had fun with them and learned a lot. Thankyou! You made this very easy and fun.
