Grade Level: 2nd Grade / Primary Elementary
Rating: 3.5 Stars

The Story of the Pyramid Cafe
Students learn about the Five Food Groups as they participate in a Readers' Theater that features five friends who dreamed of opening a restaurant for kids.

Activity Outcomes
Students will be able to:
  • Participate in a dramatic reading
  • Name the Food Guide Pyramid's Five Food Groups
  • State one way each food group keeps them healthy
Materials and Advance Prep
  • Pyramid Cafe® Mini-Poster PDF (1 per student)
  • Story of the Pyramid Cafe® Readers' Theater PDF (1 per student)
  • The Pyramid Cafe's® Five Food Groups PDF assessment (1 per student). Decide whether to use as a test, homework or seatwork.
  • Review and decide who will read the narrator, character and chorus parts of the Readers' Theater
  • Daily Food Guide Pyramid take-home handout PDF (1 per student)
  • Optional: Write and attach a note for parents to introduce the unit
What to Do
  • Open by asking students some of the things they can do to stay healthy. (Get plenty of sleep, exercise and play; eat healthy foods.) Emphasize that eating nutritious foods from each of the Five Food Groups is one of the best things they can do to help their bodies grow strong and healthy.
  • Distribute the Pyramid Cafe® Mini-Poster. Point out the Five Food Groups and the shape of the Pyramid. Introduce the characters on the handout as the Pyramid Pals.
  • Ask why they think there are five Pyramid Pals. (There are Five Food Groups that make up the Pyramid.) Tell students they are going to learn more about the Pyramid Pals and the Five Food Groups by reading a play called The Story of the Pyramid Cafe®.
  • Distribute The Story of the Pyramid Cafe®. Introduce the Pyramid Pals on the first page. Assign the roles. Read the story aloud.
  • Have students look again at Pyramid Pals pictured on the first page. Review the names of the food groups and their health benefits as you identify each Pyramid Pal. Tell students the Pyramid Pals grew up to be strong and healthy because they ate foods from the Five Food Groups.
  • Point out that they have their arms around each other as a reminder that foods from all Five Food Groups - Milk, Meat, Fruit, Vegetable and Grain - every day help students grow up strong and healthy.
Assessment
  • Distribute and have students complete The Pyramid Cafe's® Five Food Groups worksheet.
  • Review and have students correct any wrong answers.
  • Optional: Distribute the Daily Food Guide Pyramid take-home handout.

I am a nursing student, and I was assigned a professional presentation for the community. I used this lesson in a second grade class, and the kids loved it. They loved the characters and retained much of the lesson. Thank you.
