Little D's Nutrition Expedition™

Getting Started

You'll find everything you need to teach Little D's Nutrition Expeditions right here at Nutrition Explorations.org. Follow these simple steps as you prepare to teach this exciting, new program that supports USDA's MyPyramid.

Review:

  • Little D's Nutrition Expedition pre- and post-tests. Administering the pretest before and the post-test after you've taught the entire unit provides valuable information on student progress.
  • The Nutrition Backgrounder for a quick nutrition review.
  • Activities 1 though 10 and decide when you will teach them. The activities are designed to be taught in sequence to maximize learning. The nutrition concepts build on concepts previously taught. Also, the class creates a Food Group Wall Dragon, which becomes a visual summary of the Five Food Group instruction - during Activities 1 through 8.
  • Instructions for the Wall Dragon are on the Food Group Wall Dragon (PDF) downloadable master. Read directions and gather the materials you'll need ahead of time:
    • Five colored poster boards (one each of blue, purple, green, red, orange)
    • Optional: colored photocopy paper (blue, purple or lavender, green, red or pink, orange or peach)
    • Circle template
    • Dragon's head and tail
  • GOING FURTHER activities at the end of each Activity Plan and identify those you wish to use. GOING FURTHERS, which are optional, extend and enrich the lessons. Many provide simple ideas for physical activity in the classroom.
  • Play and familiarize yourself with Little D's four Interactive Nutrition Games.
